Temple Of Rats // Der Rattentempel

Around 20.000 rats live at the Karni Mata temple in Deshnok, a small town 30km south of Bikaner in Rajasthan, India. Legend has it that Karni Mata swore that nobody of her people will enter the netherworld of Yama, the god of the dead. Instead they will be reborn as rats and after that as bards. Therefore the rats are worshiped and are allowed to move around freely, fed by the visitors.

Like in all other temples visitors have to take of their shoes... Quite an experience. But when a rat runs over your feet it means luck, so hey, it has to be okay. Outside of the temple rats are seen as vermin like everywhere else.
